Gov Malloy Signs Heritage Village Condo Voting Bill

Connecticut Governor Malloy has signed into law legislation that would make it easier to defeat an annual budget at the state’s largest condo complex – Heritage Village in Southbury.

Many of the condo owners in that complex – with about 2,400 units – have been lobbying to be exempt from a state law that requires 50 percent plus one vote of all unit owners to defeat an annual budget or a special assessment.

In other words if there are 100 units in a complex 51 owners would have to vote against the budget to defeat it.

Under the new statute signed by the governor, only a majority of the owners present at the meeting have to vote against it, as long as at least one third of the unit owners oppose the budget.
